The First Nations Tax Commission held its first Annual Meeting at its Head Office in Kamloops, BC on September 18, 2008. For more about the meeting, visit the press release.
- As of September 5, 2008, 45 First Nations are participating in the First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act. An amendment to the original schedule of 33 First Nations was published in the Canada Gazette on September 17, 2008 to add 12 First Nations.
- The Tulo Centre of Indigenous Economics has opened its doors and is offering courses in the Certificate in First Nation Tax Administration program on-campus at the Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. Incoporated on January 31, 2008, the Tulo Centre was established by ITAB in 2007 as a legacy institution to deliver education and training certificates and diplomas and conduct research in the areas of First Nation taxation, public finance and economics. - On April 21, 2008, the First Nations Tax Commission and the National Energy Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which they agreed to become partners in learning by fostering and encouraging an effective working relationship on matters of mutual interest. Click here to learn more.
- The Forum of Federations and the First Nations Tax Commission held a working session on Land Title Certainty for First Nations. At the March 10-11, 2008 event in Vancouver, British Columbia, selected experts from around the world shared their experiences and visions of how a land title system could be improved to support the economic development and to increase the revenues of First Nation governments and indigenous peoples at large.
