KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA (June 18, 2007) – The Native Law Centre, University of Saskatchewan, announced today the appointment of Ms. Terry Nicholas to serve as a Commissioner on the First Nations Tax Commission (FNTC).

The ten-member FNTC is a shared governance First Nation public institution with legislative powers to regulate the on-reserve property tax system. It replaces and builds on the work of Indian Taxation Advisory Board (ITAB).

“I would like to welcome Terry to the First Nations Tax Commission,” said C.T. (Manny) Jules, Chief Commissioner of the FNTC. “Her many years of service as a tax administrator for the Akisqnuk First Nation brings an important perspective to the Commission’s deliberations.”

Ms. Nicholas is a member of the Akisqnuk First Nation in British Columbia, where she has been the property tax administrator for the past 15 years.

The Native Law Centre (NLC) is a widely respected institution in First Nations, academic and governmental communities across Canada. The NLC has maintained an apolitical approach to academic research, higher learning for Aboriginal students, and the promotion of First Nation law. This approach is critical in advancing an institution free of bias. Since 1997, the Native Law Centre has published the First Nations Gazette, through agreement with ITAB. The Gazette will continue to be published pursuant to the FSMA.

The appointment to the Commission by the Native Law Centre is a non-Governor-in-Council appointment and is a requirement of a shared-governance organization. The appointment is made pursuant to a regulation made under the FSMA.

As part of the transition, ITAB will continue its services until the Commission begins operations on July 1, 2007.
