FNTC Announces Reappointment of Commissioners
Press Releases

Kamloops, British Columbia (February 29, 2008) – Chief Commissioner, C.T. (Manny) Jules announced the reappointments by Governor-in-Council of three Commissioners to the First Nations Tax Commission (FNTC).  Mr. Lester Lafond, Mr. Randy Price and Ms. Ann Shaw have each been reappointed for three years , effective April 30, 2008.

The First Nations Fiscal and Statistical Management Act (FSMA), passed in March 2005, created the FNTC which became operational in July, 2007.  Thirty-three First Nations have officially been added to the FSMA schedule and can now use the economic tools offered by the FSMA.  Eleven more First Nations have signed Band Council Resolutions requesting they be added as soon as possible.

“ The FNTC has just completed an extensive orientation and, with these reappointments, the Commission’s collective depth, experience, and knowledge of the First Nation property tax system is maintained,” said Chief Commissioner C.T. (Manny) Jules.  “This will enable the Commission to respond to the growing interest in the FSMA and ensure the best possible service to the First Nations tax system.”

The FNTC is made up of ten Commissioners, including the Chief Commissioner and Deputy Chief Commissioner.  Nine of the Commissioners are appointed by the Governor-in-Council and one by the Native Law Centre, University of Saskatchewan.  In accordance with the FSMA, the terms of no more than three Commissioners may expire in any one calendar year.
